AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS
Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems, or warm air convectors and hot water in your home. Fitted by our MCS registered engineers, we can install your Air Source Heat Pump, separately or alongside your Underfloor Heating. Just get in touch for a free, no-obligation estimate.
How it Works
The system works by extracting heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside. Heat is absorbed by a fluid which then passes through a compressor where the temperature is increased, then this higher temperature is transferred to your home's heating and hot water circuits.
Air source heat pumps can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C. They do need some electricity to run, but the heat they extract from the air is constantly being renewed naturally, making them a more environmentally friendly choice.

Benefits of Air Source Heat Pumps
- Lower fuel bills, especially if replacing conventional electric heating.
- Lower home carbon emissions, depending on which fuel you are replacing.
- Potential returns through the UK government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
- Can be easier to install than a ground source heat pump.
- Ability to heat your home as well as your water.
- Minimal maintenance required.
- No need for fuel delivery.

Air Source Heat Pump Suitability
To tell if an air source heat pump is suitable for you, consider these key question
Do you have somewhere to put it?
You'll need a place outside your home where a unit can be fitted either to a wall or on the ground. It will need plenty of space to allow good flow of air, ideally somewhere sunny.
Do you have a well insulated home?
Your home needs to be well insulated and draught-proofed for the heating system to be effective.
What fuel will you be replacing?
Heat pumps may not be the best option for homes using mains gas, but if you are replacing an electricity or coal heating system, a heat pump will pay for itself much more quickly.
What type of heating system is in your home?
Air source heat pumps perform better with underfloor heating systems or warm air heating due to the lower water temperatures needed.
Is your project a new development?
Combining the installation with other building work can bring down the cost of installing the system.

Want to know more about the Renewable Heat Incentive?
The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) launched on April 9th 2014 and is a financial pay-back plan to promote the use of renewable heat sources, such as air and ground source heat pumps or solar technology. The scheme is being administered by OFGEM on behalf of DECC.
